Notes of hfcyclists meeting, Tuesday 5 July 2011, 7.15 for 7.30pm

Held at the home of Loretta Reehill

PRESENT: Loretta Reehill, Gerry Berridge, Ayse Kardes, John Griffiths, Sima John, David Marsh, Paul Saunderson.

APOLOGIES: Sharon Norris, Petrina Helm, Susie Gretz.

WELCOME TO NEW PEOPLE
We were pleased to meet Sima, who lives on a boat opposite the Rutland in Hammersmith with her husband and two young children, and cycles around a lot. She is unhappy about the speed some cyclists travel at when they pass the pubs on the riverfront.

BIKEWEEK
Saturday 18 June. Shepherds Bush Green event organised by LBHF / Bikeworks. LBHF brought info and an HGV for cyclists awareness and Bikeworks brought a Dr Bike and cycles for test rides. Unfortunately there was little promotion for the event, and with the heavy showers not many people were seen. Gerry and Susie organised our part, and John, David and Paul helped at some points. This went very smoothly and Gerry signed up 2 members for the LCC. Thanks to Philippa who brought the gazebo which was appreciated by all.

Wednesday 22 June. The LBHF cyclists' breakfast was an opportunity to meet many people and we are very grateful to them for laying it on. There was also a smoothie machine and a Dr Bike.

Wednesday 22 June. Marta led five of us on the sunset ride through Richmond Park to the Roebuck on Richmond Hill, where we met up with about 60 others from West London groups. It was good to see many old friends again. There was a deer or two to be seen in Richmond park on the way.

BIKEWORKS COURSES

Following on from a discussion of the effectiveness of Dr Bike, Paul said he had been on a 4hour Cycle Maintenance Course and Loretta has been on 2hr course. Their comments were that the course leader talked too much so that they did not get on and cover the material. Loretta considered her course not very hands on, compared to one she had attended through work at Westminster.

RESULTS OF FREEDOM OF INFORMATION request for speeding offences in 20mph zones in LBHF.

This is shown at the end of these notes. The remarkable thing is that the Metropolitan Police, in their records, have no category for people speeding in 20mph zones. Another curious thing is the low numbers for 2009 - 2010.

John will contact some people to try and find out what is going on. By posting on the LCC-issues list and contacting Jenny Jones. What is the point of pressing for 20mph zones if there is no policing of them at all.

MEASURING SPEEDS
of vehicles on some streets, to try and prompt the police into action. We have borrowed a radar gun from the Wandsworth group. However John has not passed this onto others yet. In a test Ayse could punch at 25mph. Gerry was going to take it after the meeting to use with Susie, but due to a slip up, John still has it.

DATE OF OUR AGM / SOCIAL,
We will not have a meeting in August. Our AGM / Social gathering will be at the Information Centre, Hammersmith Broadway on Tuesday 6 September, 7.15 for 7.30pm. see http://www.hfcyclists.org.uk/info.htm

At the AGM we will be looking for people who will help run the group. Marta has resigned as Treasurer and Gerry will be resigning as Secretary as she is going abroad, and was mainly involved with the Greenfest. Also John wants to be less involved than he is now. Loretta is prepared to put herself forward as Treasurer. Anyone who is interested in being involved should contact John to discuss things.

EXPENSES
Loretta had expenses of £38.97 for refreshments
Philippa Berridge had costs of £10 for use of a StreetVan for bringing equipment to the Shepherds Bush Bike Week event.
John had expenses of £10.80 for web hosting charges.

We authorised a cheque for up to £100 for Roger de Freitas expenses against receipts for refreshments at our Summer Garden Party, and to John for up to £70 for refreshments at our AGM / Social in September.

AOB
Paul met Chris Bainbridge recently and mentioned the lack of cycling stands outside the Cycle Surgery on Shepherds Bush Green. There have been several requests for cycle stands here and nothing has happened.

John mentioned a pothole, a sunken manhole, outside the Co-op near West Kensington Station, which he had reported a month ago, with nothing happening about it. A pothole by the zebra crossing close to West Kensington station has some white lines marked around it. That one is serious for pedestrians as well who may cross just to the side of the crossing. Others commented on the increase in potholes across London.
