1 SW corner of Shepherds Bush Green.

Simon Franklin, LBHF cycling officer, has asked John Lee for his comments on this junction. John Lee, who used to lead the London Cycle Network, is now the technical expert for the Cycling Centre of Excellence. John Lee has sent some suggestions, and has said that he would send a marked up plan.

His suggestions include making it easier to turn right when going north on Shepherds Bush rd and a cycle lane going south on Shepherds Bush rd. He is also very concerned about the signage.

[I would like to suggest the following,
a) reducing the width of the pedestrian crossing going E-W to the Green. Original this was going to be about 6m, and is now increased to 8m. This reduces space for cyclists.
b) for cyclists making turns from Goldhawk rd and Shepherds Bush rd, the lead-offs should be from the left hand lane rather than the right lane.
c) consider only one lane of traffic coming east out of Goldhawk rd. This would make more space and simplify the problem of merging for cyclists going straight ahead from shepherds Bush rd.

The latest Council Plan for the junction can be seen on our website at
http://www.hfcyclists.org.uk/SWcorner.htm

2 Suggestion for cycle parking in Racton rd for North End rd Market.

Paul Alexander and Bill Ogden are suggesting that Racton rd would make a good place for installing high quality cycle parking for North End rd. The road is exceptionally wide. Such a plan would have the backing of the New Deal for Communities. Paul envisions cycle stands in the centre of the road as in Kensington High Street. Alternatively it could be on a widened pavement .

The area is presently used for parking and overnight storage by market traders. The suggestion depends on the future plans for the Market and the Council's attitude towards the traders. [ presently a bit strained as the Council removed their storage yard and the traders won compensation] We will put forward this suggestion.

3 European cycling day. Wednesday Sept 18.

We will have 500 leaflets to distribute over the following three weeks.

Gesine said she would help with Charing Cross Hospital and Hammersmith Broadway.
John G would do some, and Bill and Paul and John R said they would distribute 50 each. We hope others not here will help out.

4 European Car free day, aka in Town Without my car. Sunday 22 September.

Mulgrave rd will be closed from 10am till 6pm for a marvellous carnival. This should be our big showcase for the year. Please try to visit the event.

We will have a stall to promote our group and the LCC. We will collect peoples suggestions for improvements and lead people on short local tours.

The only problem is we need people to actually help run this. Of those here tonight only John G, Sarah and Edison would be available. [Some others would be helping out in other ways at the event]

If you are able to help for a while on the day, please contact me [john G] by email or phone as below.

5 Council's ISSUES document.

This sets out the issues to be covered in the cycling strategy. Also it appears to be a vehicle for making suggestions. Alex Forrest has said that there is some money available from TfL for minor improvements around the borough. Please send him your suggestions. Response or suggestions needed by 30 September.

The Issues document is at:
http://www.lbhf.gov.uk/Our_Borough/cyclists/Cycle%20PDF.pdf
It is a PDF file which requires Adobe Acrobat Reader to open it. If you do not have it, it can be downloaded for free from
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

We discussed the problem of antisocial cyclists. Perhaps the reference to targeting young males is reminiscent of sus laws, and Paul suggested referring just to antisocial or inconsiderate cycling.

{I shall respond to the ISSUES document to try and make the cycling strategy address some of the things not mentioned. This includes making the Council more efficient in how it may deliver what it says it will do. [The appearance of this issues document is very behind schedule. Why have TfL been brought in to look at Shepherds Bush Green only weeks before digging is about to start? Best Value means that voluntary groups should actually be listened to. Better co-operation between Highways and the Policy group. etc]

7 Rides

Plan for west London solstice get together. Provisional date and venue: Bulls Head, Barnes on Sunday 15 December. We will have a ride to join it.

8 Date of next meeting. Some people have expressed a preference for the meeting date not to be a Wednesday. If you are a potentially active person and might be more likely to come to a meeting on a Tuesday than a Wednesday, please contact me in the next few days. We will decide the date of the next meeting in a few days time. Probably Tuesday 8 or Wednesday 9 of October.
